Instagram is about four and a half years old now, and has over 300 million users, but a lot of businesses are still just trying to get started with a presence on the visual social network. Some have been nailing it for a long while now, but for a lot of smaller businesses, it’s just another thing to keep up with, and many no doubt wonder just where they should start.

We had a conversation with Gary Jordan of TheInstagramExpert.com, and he shared his thoughts on how businesses should approach getting started with the platform.

Jordan says the best thing businesses can do when they’re getting started on Instagram is to set themselves up for success from the very beginning by making an easy-to-read username with very few underscores,periods, or numbers (unless they’re absolutely necessary) as well as including an easily identifiable profile picture or logo. It should be easily read/seen on a small cell phone screen. You should have an appealing/intriguing bio, and add the right URL to the best landing page on your site for conversions, he says.

“If you don’t get these essentials right from the beginning, it will be a lot harder for you to get Instagram followers, no matter how much uploading you do,” says Jordan.

According to Jordan, the best way to grow followers for a business just starting on on Instagram differs slightly from one that already has an established fan base. For those starting out, he says, “One of the best ways to grow your Instagram follower count is by implementing an entertaining content strategy that is more than just pictures of your products. People want to feel the personality of your brand. Portray a lifestyle, and people who are interested in it will follow.”

“No matter what stigma you have against it or advice that you have heard, one of the fastest ways for a new brand/business to grow a following on Instagram, is to follow others and follow your current followers back,” he adds. “Instagram is one of the best social media platforms for this strategy because they allow you to follow up to 7500 people.”

“In the beginning, consistency is going to be key,” Jordan says. “Posting once a week is not going to help you to gain loyal followers. Ideally you would want to post something to your Instagram account at least twice a day, but once a day will suffice if you do the other things above.”

Asked about best practices for mentioning, hashtags, liking, and commenting, Jordan says utilizing these things effectively is one of the most important things in Instagram marketing.

“You have to foster a conversation between your brand/business and your followers/customers,” Jordan says. “The closer they feel to the business, the more likely they are to become a superfan. This can be done relatively easy on Instagram by just liking & commenting on the content of other users, and re-posting some of your favorite photos of theirs on your timeline and shouting them out.”

“Another good way to keep your followers engaged is to have them submit their best photos to you, that are related to your business or what it offers, for a chance for them to be featured on your page,” he adds. “The best way to keep all submissions in order is by utilizing a specific hashtag that your followers can use to submit.”

Video has become very popular on Instgram since it was launched about a year and a half ago. Don’t forget that as of earlier this month, videos now loop continuously.

Jordan says videos are one of his favorite things to use on Instagram because most competitors don’t use them to their full potential yet.

“If used right, they can be like mini 15 second commercials for your business/brand every time you post,” he says. “I would say the best way to get started posting videos on Instagram is by re-posting other videos that are related to your business that you believe your followers may like. After a while you can venture into making your own videos of your business, products, services. Make them personable and tell a brand story and people will watch and enjoy. Always remember to tag them with the appropriate hashtags.”

We asked Jordaon what the most common mistake is that he sees businesses making on Instagram. His answer is a pretty easy one to correct. It’s simply not getting started or signing up and forgetting about it.

“If you want it to work and bring you in business, you have to be willing to put in at least 30 minutes to an hour a day to grow and maintain your following. But think about it, if you can gain just 50 followers a day, that’s 18,250 in one year. That can be a game changer for a lot of businesses.”

Asked about brands that are doing it right, he says, “There’s a lot of brands out there killing it right now but some of my favorites are: @SnoopDogg, @NBA, @GoPro, @Starbucks, and @CousinCoutoure. I like them because they all post consistent, relevant content and make it fun and interesting for their followers.”

I always thought Bolthouse Farms did a great job using Instagram to inspire product sales. They’ve run campaigns that encourage users to take a picture of their product, and upload it to Instgram with the right hashtag in order to get a significant discount. More on that here.

Last year, we spoke with Curalate CEO Apu Gupta about how brands should be using visual social media, including Instagram.

“Two things work particularly well with Instagram,” he said at the time. “From the perspective of a brand, Instagram offers an opportunity to bring the consumer into the brand’s world in a very human and authentic way. It’s about artistry and the celebration of how lives are enhanced by being connected to the brand. The other thing we see work really well with Instagram is taking the photos that fans have generated and making those photos shoppable. Curalate has worked with numerous brands including Rebecca Minkoff and Urban Outfitters to do just this, and the results have been astounding.”

In the summer, we looked at data from Shareablee finding that Instagram brand posts were getting three times the engagement of Facebook posts. Just two months ago, SocialBakers shared data showing that Instgram is completely blowing Twitter away in engagement among the most engaging brand profiles.

In other words, Instagram is a pretty great social network to participate in if you’re looking for followers that will actually interact with your brand.

Not very high. According to SkilledUp, a curator of information about online classes and boot camps related to programming, only 5% of people make it all the way through an online programming course, although 10% complete it if they pay for it.

It gets worse. Experts say that even if you complete an online coding class, you’re still not close to being prepared for a job in the industry. “The myth that anyone can wake up one day, attend a bootcamp and graduate into a six-figure salary is misleading,” said Daniel Daks, product manager at SkilledUp. “I have yet to meet a learner who has gone from complete novice to professional developer through a single learning product.”

Those who have made the transition say there’s another limiting factor: It’s very difficult to teach yourself programming when you have a full-time job. This explains why teens are often adept at programming; unfettered from adult responsibilities, they have lots of leisure time to hone their skills. Adults looking to replicate that experience may be better off quitting their jobs, so they can throw themselves into learning coding full-time, rather than putting in an hour here or there.

“It basically takes six to 12 months of doing it full-time,” said Chris Sunsong, a self-taught programmer. “Looking back, if I had made time to do it when I was fully employed elsewhere, I think it would have been futile.”

Sunsong, now 30, left his job several years ago to learn Ruby on Rails. To do so, he used free resources, such as Codecademy and Treehouse, to teach himself for eight to 10 hours a day, every day for nine months.

“I basically slaved away through every tutorial I could find,” he said. “I’d recreate a project, and when I hit a wall, I’d find a tutorial on that topic, and I’d keep on repeating it.”

After all that, Sunsong got an entry-level job as a programmer, which he loves.

Not everyone believes you have to quit your full-time job to learn programming, though. Ryan Carson, CEO of Treehouse, said most people can learn by devoting 30 minutes to an hour every day over a period of months.

“It’s definitely something you can do in the morning before your kids get up, or over lunch,” he said. “We’ve seen our students go through it in six to 12 months.”

Carson added that Treehouse’s completion rate is 30%, perhaps because it’s paid — Treehouse charges $25 to $49 a month — but also because the company has honed its instruction.

“We’ve been doing it for four years,” he said. “We’re starting to get to the point where we’ve finally cracked the secret.”

Joe Fusco’s experience shows that you can have a full-time job in an unrelated field, teach yourself coding and switch careers. Two years ago, Fusco, who lives in Rochester, New York, was working two jobs to make ends meet. “I started in the restaurant industry. I was a dishwasher,” he said.

He later left to become a bouncer at night, while working a security job during the day. Often, Fusco would pull a 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift, then have a two-hour break before his 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift started, where he made $10 an hour.

“After a year of that, I started to get burned out,” he said. “At that time, my daughter was on the way, so that kind of drove me to further myself, too, because hey, this wasn’t going to cut it.”

Fusco’s security job allowed him to put in some computer time; he snuck in a few hours here and there on Treehouse. After two or three months, he got a tech job at Phu Concepts, a web design and online-marketing company in Rochester.

However, there’s one big asterisk to Fusco’s story. Prior to teaching himself programming, he was one semester shy of completing a computer science degree. Fusco said he didn’t get much practical coding knowledge from college, but it probably didn’t hurt.

SkilledUp’s Daks said he believes the value of online programming courses is that it teaches you the basics. Beyond that, unless you already have a decent base of knowledge, you’ll probably need some help, Daks added.

“The essence of what makes Codecademy great for beginners is what limits it from taking intermediary learners to the next level: real-world conditions,” he said. “The next step often requires learners to transition to an educational format that embraces the various realities of a professional programmer. No longer can a learner’s missteps be predicted by generic tips or hints, and they often require some degree of personalized attention and increased commitment.”

Well into the third decade of my life, these days it’s a rare occurrence when I’m the youngest at anything. But on that evening night there I was, with my husband (the second youngest person), mingling with other Sydney Morning Herald subscribers at Fairfax’s own meet the press shindig.

The panel discussion was on sports journalism, featuring three talented Fairfax journalists, with Peter Fitzsimons and his headscarf as the headline act. What they had to say was interesting, and I’ll get to that in a minute.

What was more fascinating was that about half of the audience had grey hair. This is what the typical engaged newspaper reader looks like these days.

Most were also white and male. The latter has to do more with the subject matter than anything else. The racial demographic reflects the diversity amongst the Herald’s journalists.

Since half the discussion was about rugby union, I couldn’t help but draw obvious parallels between the dwindling number of supporters of that sport and their socioeconomic status, and the Herald’s print readership.

One member of the audience complained that the Herald’s coverage on rugby union is out of proportion to rugby league, favouring the more popular sport by a ratio of 1.5 to 8 pages. When one of the journalists empathised and helpfully recommended that he visit Fairfax’s rugbyheaven.com.au for exhaustive coverage on union, the audience member dismissed the advice.

To state the obvious, that particular Herald reader, aged around 70 years old, doesn’t want to have to go on the internet to fetch his news. That’s what the paper is for.

Of course, we know that the print-only reader is an increasingly rare breed of media consumer. Nielsen recently released its report on top-ranked news sites in Australia, and concluded overall that the number of active readers in Australia has increased by 2 million to a total of 17.5 million. (Side note: the numbers were partly augmented due to Nielsen changing their methodology.)

The numbers weren’t surprising. What became newsworthy was that Nielsen controversially excluded Buzzfeed, a US-based site, from its rankings because its content is not considered news.

In this brave new digital age, the definition of news surely needs to be relaxed. Should pictures of dogs who can skateboard be considered news? Perhaps not, but neither should Richard Wilkins’ hair. Regardless, the ABC saw it fit to report on the Twitter buzz around that topic on Logies night. Old media reporting on social media on a TV presenter – narcissistic much?

Which brings me to what the journalists on the panel discussion had to say about their jobs. A principal motivating factor for journalists is seeing their byline and headshot in the paper. Another is talking to readers by email or Twitter. They do it for the love.

To fulfil those needs, it’s not necessary to be part of the Fairfax or News machine. If newspaper readers are a dying breed, then so too are quality journalists who can get their buzz elsewhere. Especially the ones who have left because of budget cuts. They can just set up a site like Ryantology and become part of new media. (Any Veep fans out there? I’m addicted.)

As a PR exercise, I like what Fairfax is doing, promoting their writers as media personalities and getting them to meet their constituency. It’s another step in the evolution of Fairfax.

As they know better than anyone, it’s a long Darwinian journey ahead for media companies wanting to survive in the digital age. When I’m 70, I’ll probably be lamenting the death of newsprint.
